Be Alert Stop Card Fraud

Be Alert - Stop Card Fraud

Card fraud in Ireland is on the increase and there is a growing need for retailers to pro-actively, protect themselves against it. The problem of card fraud is an international one with criminal gangs and many unsavoury people involved. Retail staff are the front-line defence against plastic card fraud. Alongside fraud prevention technologies retail staff are incredibly important in the fight against card criminals.

How Does Card Fraud Affect Retailers ?

*
Theft of hard-earned profits
*
Threat to staff safety
*
Threat of reputation
*
It is a known fact that revenue raised from card fraud funds other serious criminal and terrorist activity

Fraud Trends in Ireland

Fraud losses on plastic cards in Ireland last year amounted to €16 million. Technological advances in payment mechanisms such as Chip and PIN have dramatically reduced our exposure to fraud risk with regard to Card Present transactions (i.e. where the card is physically present at the time of the transaction). However, we are seeing a trend where a substantial amount of fraud is migrating towards Card Not Present transactions (e.g. mail order, telephone order & the Internet). In fact, as much as 64% of all fraud carried out on Irish cards is now carried out in a Card Not Present environment.

To stop migration of this fraud and to curb natural increases in card fraud generally, retailers need to be proactive about fraud prevention measures and Safecard is there to help you do this - completely free of charge! In this section you will find a list of frequently asked questions, downloadable training material and lots of useful advice.

If you would like a member of the SafeCard team to provide you with specific / tailored advice or if you wish us to give a presentation to your group on effective fraud preventative techniques in your organisation please just let us know and we'd be happy to help.
